GREAT BAY, Friday: MP Sjamira Roseburg was present for the 35th commemoration of the House of Detention in Point Blanche. She issued remarks recognizing long service and commitment in the correctional system. MP Roseburg's relationship with many of the personnel goes back years to when she first started her professional career as an attorney. Being at the event recalled emotional connections that she still holds dear to this day.

"I extend my deepest gratitude and congratulations to each of you. You embody resilience, honor, and excellence in public service.” "We are soldiers" was the theme for the celebration with a touch of camouflage as the dresscode, and Roseburg dressed accordingly. The event was also attended by other government officials including MPs and the Minister of Justice.

Remarks by MP Sjamira Roseburg:

We take this moment to honor and celebrate five remarkable individuals whose dedication has been the backbone of our correctional system for more than three decades.

Mrs. Doran-York, Mr. Reenis, Ms. Gario, Mr. Martina, and Mr. Lake, each of you has given over 35 years of service in the field of corrections. Your discipline, perseverance, and professionalism through every challenge reflect true strength of character.

Working in this environment is never easy. It demands patience, resilience, and heart. Despite the difficult circumstances and limited resources, you continue to show up, performing your duties with integrity and ensuring that the system keeps running. That level of dedication deserves the highest respect.

Too often, the real soldiers are not those in the spotlight, but those who work quietly in the background, steady, disciplined, and committed to keeping things together. Our correctional officers and staff are those soldiers, and it is time their service receives the recognition it rightfully deserves.

In my duties as a lawyer, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges and realities you face within the prison system. I have seen the pressure, the difficult circumstances, and the limited conditions in which you work, yet you continue to make it all function with professionalism and care.

Let it be known that your hard work has not been in vain. The years you have given and the example you have set have laid the foundation for a stronger and more just system. To all prison guards and staff who continue to show up daily under these challenging conditions, know that your commitment has not gone unnoticed. Better days are ahead, and your dedication will help bring about the improvements you deserve. Your service today is building the standard for tomorrow.
