THE HAGUE--On Monday, October 13, 2025, St. Maarten commemorated its 15th anniversary as a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, celebrating Constitution Day under the theme “Fifteen Years of Country Status - Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future.”

In recognition of this milestone and as the first President of the Parliament of Sint Maarten, the Minister Plenipotentiary of Sint Maarten, Drs. Gracita R. Arrindell, delivered a special address to the Parliament of Sint Maarten, joining officials and dignitaries from across the country in reflecting on Sint Maarten’s constitutional journey since October 10, 2010.

In her remarks, Minister Arrindell looked back on the early years of nation-building, noting that the day serves not only as a celebration of autonomy but also as a moment of reflection on shared values and collective purpose.

“When I was handed the key to an empty building, I understood the immense responsibility that came with it. Together with the members of the first Parliament, we worked tirelessly to lay the foundation of our democracy, one built on accountability, purpose, and service to the people of Sint Maarten.”

Looking ahead, the Minister expressed her hopes for continued progress and inclusive development: “Our task now is to ensure that the laws we make translate into a better quality of life for every citizen, where affordable housing is not a luxury, education is priceless, healthcare is accessible, and our environment is protected. These are not political promises; they are national imperatives, anchored in our Constitution.”

The official session, held at the Parliament Building in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, featured contributions from former recipients of the President of Parliament Award: Ralph Cantave and Rochana Richardson, the Parliament Faction Leaders, the President of Parliament, Sarah A. Wescot-Williams, and Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina.

The celebrations continued throughout the day with cultural showcases, parades, and a national reflection on Sint Maarten’s growth and resilience over the past decade and a half.

Constitution Day, officially recognized as a national public holiday, serves as a reminder of both the responsibilities and opportunities that come with nationhood. It also highlights the country’s ongoing commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, investing in youth and education, and fostering unity through cooperation.
