GREAT BAY--Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunications (TEATT) Grisha Heyliger-Marten has expressed deep concern regarding the recent rise in armed robberies targeting businesses, hotels, and members of the community. The Minister warns that the situation now poses not only a public safety risk but also a direct threat to the economic foundation of St. Maarten.
“As Minister of TEATT, I am extremely concerned. This is not just a public safety issue—it is an economic threat,” she stated.
Addressing the young men involved in these violent acts, the Minister delivered a clear and urgent message:
“This must stop. You are not only destroying your own future—you are damaging the future of the entire country. When you walk into a business or hotel with a weapon, you traumatize workers, frighten visitors, weaken investor confidence, and directly endanger our only economy. If you believe you are ‘doing what you must to survive,’ hear me clearly: You are taking food off everyone else’s table. When tourism stops coming, it is over for St. Maarten. You are capable of better. This island needs you to do better.”
She also called on the business community to reinforce security measures in light of the recent attacks.
“Although it pains me to say, you must take additional precautions. Ensure security cameras are functioning, improve lighting, and stay vigilant during opening and closing hours. This is not your fault—but protecting your staff and customers must now be a shared responsibility.”
The Minister emphasized that addressing crime requires more than government action alone.
“To the community at large: Crime does not begin with government; it starts at home. Talk to your sons, nephews, cousins, and friends. Help them understand the consequences of these actions.”
She concluded by thanking the Police Force of St. Maarten for their ongoing efforts under difficult circumstances.
“I thank our Police Force for their continued service. Government cannot curb this alone. It takes a village to protect St. Maarten.”
The Ministry of TEATT will continue to engage the business sector, law enforcement, and community organizations as part of a collective effort to safeguard St. Maarten’s stability, security, and economic future.
