GREAT BAY--St. Maarten’s airlift from the important Orlando market remains firmly supported, even as Frontier Airlines is adjusting its network and discontinuing its Orlando to St. Maarten service from August 15. This is somewhat typical operational behavior from this airline which tends to insert and remove flights by the season and as market conditions shift.

The reported change comes as Frontier Airlines undertakes a broader network reshuffle involving several cities and more than 20 routes. For St. Maarten, the adjustment appears to reflect a repositioning of service in a market that has changed significantly with the arrival of Southwest Airlines on the same Orlando to St. Maarten route.

Southwest Airlines launched daily nonstop service between Orlando International Airport and Princess Juliana International Airport in April 2026, creating a new level of direct access between St. Maarten and one of Florida’s busiest travel hubs. The carrier’s Orlando service also provides St. Maarten with broader connectivity through Southwest’s domestic network, linking the destination to dozens of U.S. cities.

Frontier, which previously served the Orlando to St. Maarten market on a more limited schedule, is now reportedly stepping back from the route as Southwest establishes a larger presence. The shift is consistent with wider airline industry patterns, where carriers regularly adjust seasonal and leisure routes based on demand, competition, aircraft utilization and network priorities.

The development does not represent a loss of the Orlando market for St. Maarten. Instead, it signals a change in how that market is being served. With Southwest now operating the route daily, St. Maarten continues to benefit from nonstop Orlando connectivity, while travelers retain direct access to the destination from Central Florida.

The entry of Southwest into St. Maarten has been viewed as a major airlift milestone, strengthening the island’s position in the U.S. market and expanding access for visitors from Florida and beyond. The Orlando route is particularly important because of its role as a major domestic connection point and its appeal to leisure travelers.

Frontier’s reported route adjustment should therefore be seen within the context of a competitive and evolving aviation landscape. Airlines frequently review route performance and make changes as market conditions shift. In this case, Southwest’s emergence on the route has altered the competitive environment, prompting Frontier to reposition its service.

St. Maarten remains well positioned to maintain and grow U.S. visitor access through a combination of established carriers, new airline partnerships and strategic route development. The continued presence of nonstop Orlando service through Southwest ensures that the market remains active and accessible for travelers planning vacations to the island.
