Unprecedented on the territory, the first free diving championship organized by the Tainos apnea school and the association for the development of apnea in St-Martin will be held at the Samanna of the Belmond group this Sunday, September 3, 2023 from 9 a.m.
With the desire to introduce freediving to as many people as possible, Florian Mioni, president of the Association for the Development of Freediving in Saint-Martin (ADASM) who has practiced the discipline since his earliest childhood, is expecting around thirty participants for this first freediving open, open to adults, beginners or experienced. For the most novices, freediving is a sporting discipline that involves free diving underwater with a single breath, without respiratory assistance, guided by a lifeline up to several levels of depth and then resurfacing. The 1st freediving open on September 3 at Samanna (Terres Basses), worthy of major competitions, has all the necessary authorizations to organize such a sporting event aimed at introducing the discipline. On registration of 20€, the participants will have to provide themselves with an individual insurance for the practice of apnea in competition and a medical certificate. Three categories will be offered: free immersion, without fins, using the lifeline to dive, constant weight where free diving is done with fins and finally, the most difficult, constant weight without fins. and without using the rope. Participants will be taken by boat from the beach on another 12-meter craft three kilometers offshore, equipped with a preparation platform. Safety will be optimal with a medical team from the Center Hospitalier Louis-Constant Fleming, a rapid oxygenation system and a defibrillator on the first aid device, two certified students from the apnea school specially trained to easily and effortlessly ascend any person in difficulty and sounder assistance to locate each diver in real time. The physical condition of each will be judged and evaluated before any descent. Lovers of the Big Blue are invited to take part in this unique experience which holds great rewards for the competitors. The award ceremony will take place at 17 p.m. at the Samanna beach restaurant to honor the three best freedivers, men's and women's categories. A special prize will be dedicated to the deepest dive.
