GREAT BAY--The Sint Maarten National Athletic Federation (SNAF) has been informed of the cancellation of the Dutch National Championships U18 & U20, which were scheduled to take place this weekend in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Athletics Federation made the decision due to the extreme temperatures forecasted during the event period. The safety and well-being of athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators were cited as the main reasons for the cancellation.

While the decision is disappointing, SNAF fully supports the prioritization of athlete health and safety.

The cancellation affects several athletes from St. Maarten who were preparing to compete at the highest national level.

Among them is Nahjah Wyatte, who, at just 14 years old, entered the championships ranked second in the Netherlands in the U18 category. Nahjah had been looking forward to competing against the nation’s best athletes and continuing his impressive development on the track.

Also affected is Carlos Brison, who is currently ranked number one in the Netherlands in the U20 Men’s 800 meters. Carlos was preparing to defend his national ranking and pursue qualification for the World Athletics U20 Championships. The cancellation is a major disappointment, as the championships represented an important opportunity for him to work toward his qualification goals.

SMAF recognizes the hard work, dedication and sacrifices made by these athletes, their coaches and their families throughout the season. Although this outcome is unfortunate, the federation encourages its athletes to remain focused and motivated as alternative opportunities may arise.

SNAF understands that the Dutch Athletics Federation is exploring the possibility of rescheduling the championships later this year. The federation remains hopeful that a suitable solution can be found and looks forward to seeing St. Maarten’s athletes compete when conditions allow.

SMAF extends its support to all athletes affected by this decision and commends them for their perseverance, discipline and continued commitment to excellence.
