Le overseas support and assistance building (BSAOM) Dumont d'Urville will make a stopover this weekend in Saint-Martin. Based in Fort-de-France, this French Navy ship, commissioned in 2020, specializes in maritime safeguarding and the protection of French interests overseas. On the occasion of his presence on the Galisbay port, it will exceptionally open its doors to the public.
Two self-guided tour slots are offered: Saturday, October 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Sunday, October 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Access will be via the quay, with specific instructions: bring water and sunscreen, leave strollers on land or on the ship's rear deck, and take into account that the architecture of the ship does not allow the reception of Handicapped.
65 meters long and 14 meters wide, the Dumont d'Urville of Armed Forces in the Antilles impresses with its versatility. Designed for varied missions, it participates equally well in the surveillance of maritime areas as well as rescue operations, pollution control and, occasionally, maritime policing. The ship is also equipped to support the armed forces, transport freight and even intervene against drug trafficking, thanks to its fast boats and its commando davit.
With two crews of 24 sailors taking turns every four months, the ship provides a permanence at sea of more than 200 days per yearIts new arrival in Saint-Martin, piloted by Lieutenant Thomas Chauveau, commander of crew B of the Dumont d'Urville, is an opportunity for the inhabitants to (re)discover an essential tool of the Navy, guarantor of French security and sovereignty in the Caribbean. _Vx
