Project ecological rehabilitation of the Galisbay pond supported by the Collectivity of Saint-Martin, it was selected as part of the European BESTLIFE2030 program, a scheme financed by the European Union with the support of the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB), intended to support initiatives in favor of biodiversity in overseas territories.
Entitled “Galisbay Pond: Towards a model of urban ecology in Saint-Martin”The project was developed by the Environment Department under the leadership of the 2nd Vice-President, Bernadette Davis. This selection makes it eligible for European funding to restore this natural site located in the heart of the urban area.
Beyond preserving biodiversity, the project aims to make the pond a more accessible space for residents. Ecological restoration work will be carried out, along with the development of a walking trail, wildlife observation points, and educational panels designed to raise awareness of the site's rich biodiversity. The association Nature Is The Key will also take part in the project by offering awareness-raising activities and workshops open to different audiences, in order to involve residents in the protection of this ecosystem.
The first actions should begin shortly. Through this project, the Collectivity intends to reconcile environmental preservation, enhancement of natural heritage and improvement of the living environment, with the ambition of making the Galisbay pond an example of urban ecology in Saint-Martin.
