The prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin is urging the population to exercise extreme caution in the face of the drought currently affecting the two territories. Weather conditions are creating a high risk of wildfires, and authorities report that nine out of ten fires are caused by human activity.

To limit risks, several preventative measures are reiterated. In particular, burning green waste, whether in the open air or in a garden incinerator, is prohibited. Residents are asked to deposit branches, leaves, grass clippings, and other combustible waste in the designated containers. The Galisbay waste disposal center is open free of charge Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The prefecture also recommends not storing flammable materials, gas cylinders, or fuel near homes or dry vegetation. Barbecues are prohibited outside designated areas, as is discarding cigarette butts in nature or from a vehicle. Work likely to produce sparks, such as welding, grinding, or the use of certain brush cutters, should also be avoided near dry areas.

In the event of a fire, authorities ask that you immediately alert the emergency services by dialing 18, the 112 or 17and then seek safety by following the instructions of the emergency services. This call for vigilance comes as the persistent drought increases the vulnerability of natural areas and reinforces the risk of rapid fire spread.
