Organized from November 25 to December 2, 2023 in Guadeloupe and the islands of the archipelago and the North, the Writing Festival of the Americas will take place in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy for one evening, on Thursday, November 30 from 18:30 p.m. to 20 p.m. at the Hommage Hôtel de Baie Nettle and at the Brigantin in Gustavia.
Since 2000, the literary event created by the writer Maryse Condé and the industrialist Amédée Huyghues Despointes to celebrate literature from here and elsewhere remains inspired by their ideal of meeting, exchange and openness. The geographical horizons, the imaginary universes of more than fifty writers who have since come to dialogue with the public, bear witness to the fidelity to this philosophy. Connected by deep affinities and the power of words and stories, the authors share with the public the promises of their novelistic ambitions, arouse interest in contemporary literary creation, a taste for reading and offer writing workshops in youth leadership. From the creation of the Insular Americas Prize, to the birth of the Writings of the Americas Festival, more than forty writers have come from territories bordered by the Atlantic. This Thursday, November 30, the sister island will receive the French writer Frédéric Beigbeder and Miguel Bonnefoy with a presentation by Jean-Jacques Dayries, at the Brigantin in Gustavia. On our territory, at the Hommage Hôtel from 18:30 p.m., the literature-loving public will be able to meet Kaiama L. Glover, Emmelie Prophète and Nicolas Carreau, in an interview. Kaïama Glover is professor of French and African studies and director of the Barnard Digital Humanities Center. His teachings and work favor French-speaking literature, in particular that of Haiti and the French West Indies, question colonialism and concern the cinema of French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. Emmelie Prophète is a novelist, poet and journalist. First cultural attaché of Haiti in Geneva, she made a career in the literary world, through her poetic and novelistic work, telling the story of her country, Haiti. Nicolas Carreau, son of a bookseller, entered the studios of Europe 1 where he distilled literary chronicles before producing “La Voix est livre”. The journalist and writer thus shares with as many people as possible in the simplicity of exchanges his passionate relationship with reading and stories._VX
