PHILIPSBURG – Minister of Finance Richard Gibson wants a law school to be established on St. Maarten.
The Minister disclosed at a recent Council of Ministers press briefing that a committee he installed have submitted a report on the feasibility of establishing a law school on the island.
The committee is comprised of Mavis Brooks, vice president of the Council of Advice Gaston Bell, Deputy Governor Reynoldt Groenveldt, Patsy Phillips and Judge Bob Wit.
“The establishment of a law school is extremely important to be able to improve the knowledge base of St. Maarten, and produce crucial skills to support the governmental apparatus and the overall economy of St. Maarten. It will also be a source to reduce brain drain and it will offer many a second chance to tertiary education,” Minister Gibson said.
“In order to survive in every globalized world, we have to invest in human capital. Investment in our people is the best investment we can make to create a firm foundation for our country,” he added. The Minister noted that ways have to be found to raise money for this initiative, but he is committed to do so.
