ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands has its newest Attorney in Mrs Persia A. Tobin-Evelyn.
Mrs Tobin-Evelyn, a Virgin Islander, was today December 2, 2015 admitted to the Bar of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) in the Virgin Islands. She was called to the Bar before High Court Justice, Honourable Nicola P. Byer.
The Attorney at Law had started her legal training at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados in 2011 where she attained a Bachelor of Laws with Second Class Honours-Upper.
A further two years was devoted to Bar School at the Eugene Dupuch Law School in The Bahamas. The Eugene Dupuch Law School is part of the Council of Legal Education (“CLE”), a regional organisation which also operates law schools in Trinidad and Tobago (the Hugh Wooding Law School), and Jamaica (Norman Manley Law School) and allows persons the option to be trained as a legal practitioner within the Caribbean as opposed to the United Kingdom.
Strong legal backing
At today’s ceremony, Attorney Tobin-Evelyn was nominated by prominent Attorney Samuel Jack Husbands, a senior partner of international law firm Walkers and seconded by Jerry D. Samuel, a partner in Conyers Dill & Pearman, another international law firm operating in the Virgin Islands.
It was an admission process for the local Attorney surrounded by immediate family and friends, including her mother Mrs Bernice Leonard-Tobin of Sea Cows Bay, Tortola.
While attending law school, Mrs Tobin-Evelyn was awarded a total of eleven (11) academic prizes for her performance in Criminal, Civil and Commercial Law.
Mrs Tobin-Evelyn told our news room last month that her achievements “demonstrate that locals can be competitive with other Caribbean Jurisdictions.”
Family ties
Mrs Tobin-Evelyn, who is now making her mark with international law firm Harneys as an Associate, is the daughter of the late police inspector Ronald A. Tobin, and the sister of former Elmore Stoutt High School acting Principal Wade W. Tobin, now the current Headmaster at the local Seventh-day Adventist School.
Prior to pursuing her legal studies, Attorney Tobin-Evelyn had a range of work experiences, including five years as the Assistant Director of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Government of the Virgin Islands. She is also the sister of former Permanent Secretary and Advance Marketing & Professional Services Chairman, the esteemed Julian Willock.
