GREAT BAY – The appeal of Kevin Maurice Cohen against his conviction for causing a fatal accident that caused the death of former Rotary president Ramesh Bhagwandas Manek has been postponed until March 2 of next year.

The case was on the docket of the Common Court of Justice yesterday, but Cohen’s attorney, Eldon Sulvaran, had informed the court that he had been “unexpectedly confronted with matters that demand his full attention.”

Those matters are an injunction against the extradition of his client Gregory Koeiman to the United States.

While this injunction is only in court next week, the Common Court granted Sulvaran’s request for a postponement.

Kevin Cohen, a bartender at the Platinum room in Maho, drove his father’s 2,200 kilo Hummer on April 16 of last year at high speed over the airport road where the 53-year old Manek was jogging. When Cohen overtook a couple of cars, he hit Manek who died on the spot.

In January, the prosecution demanded 48 months of imprisonment against the 32-year old Cohen, with 18 months suspended and 3 years of probation. The prosecution also demanded that Cohen’s driver’s license be revoked for 3 years. The court presented a much lighter sentence in February: 6 months of imprisonment, with 3 months suspended, 2 years of probation, 120 hours of community service and a ban on driving a car for 9 months.
